Well, my trainer wants me to stop drinking soda...WHAT???? Arghhhh....That's my "sweet treat" every day. I have one with lunch and another with supper. Then, I have a carbonated water some other time of day...Yes, I drink straight water too, but the 3 carbonated beverages that I have had daily have been routine for years! I asked her "why"? Now, her rationale was a bit hazy, other than the fluids go straight to the belly if they aren't "water". I was still skeptical...So, I did my own research since our training session yesterday afternoon...Here's what I've found out....
The carbonic acid used to make the drinks is an acid (duh..) and throws the body's natural acid/base balance off. A few years ago, my aunt worked with a doctor that assisted her in balancing her acid/base balance and she ended up shedding about 40 pounds of fat that she's kept off. Makes sense...Drink acid and body becomes more acidic, thereby hindering the natural flow of things...
Next, carbon dioxide is considered a "waste" by the body and it excretes it via various methods...even in exhaling...So why would I put more "waste" in my body to make it work harder to get rid of?
Water is a natural product that makes up most of the body's, and Earth's, natural structure...If I drink soda, I deprive my body of the healthier option that water is...Also, makes sense...
The reason I am most willing to accept this challenge is to see if the scale will change faster. I have seen articles during the research that have purported that diet soda doesn't allow fat to be shed, even holding onto it when a person is doing all the other "right" things like exercising regularly and eating healthy foods.
So, I'm giving it 2 weeks, starting today. I've already had a bottle of water and have some unsweetened green tea for lunch that is chilled and ready to go...The results will be telling. I may give it more time after our vacation in 2 weeks, but will analyze that later. I'm not sure what beverages will be available when we travel to Greece, so I don't want to make the commitment through the vacation too.
Workouts are going great and food has been healthy, good-tasting fuel for my body...My quick measurement on Saturday morning revealed that my hip measurement is down another inch! In just one month of workouts, and the scale staying the same, I was able to noticably shed some more fat. One day at a time, one step at a time, I WILL reach my goal of a healthy, slim, strong body. I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

I am struggling with this very same problem--soda. I drink decaffeinated diet coke. I know it is bad stuff, but I really like it!
Great research Margi. Really made me think.
When I am "on my game" I try & avoid any pop. I find it stimulates cravings. I also read somewhere that the sweet taste confuses the body to think it has had sugar, which puts it into a sugar seeking mode (even with diet pop).
Good luck on your abstinence program for pop!
Thanks for stopping Shari and Cyn...I've got 24 hours under my belt and have a "thick head" this morning...Weird, because I am drinking coffee...I'll have to see what other "effects" pop up...especially the effect of the what the scale tells me!
So interesting what you are working out for the good of your body. A hard decision, as most of us are so in love with coke zero here, and Dr. Pepper in Texas as was my case. I am trying to clean up my eating too, have ditched coffee, and cokes, but I do let myself have them if I get into a spot that I really want them. That means it´s me in charge instead of them. Today I had a coke zero with tons of ice and loved it. Now, my fix is in place and won´t have another for many days and maybe weeks. Some mornings I want a black coffee with stevia while doing my emails...usually just a cup of hot water. I can´t tell if am any healthier myself, but by not putting in chemicals, acid, it surely is a smart move. My impetus is on trying to do all alkaline. Surely, our hair will be shinier or something by doing positive things....
Have fun on your vacation. Lots of time afterwards to cut out. You need to enjoy yourself, and maybe a coke at times will be the thing to do. Just be aware, drink water when you can, and if you can´t well, no regrets. You are doing so well now, so more of the same!
Thanx for the comment today!
Lynda
Margaret, thanks for putting me straight..check out my EXTRA post for today. Consider it a retraction. Thank you.
Hi Margaret,
Am replying about Dougal´s blog today about Obama. So funny. You know, you just really can´t tell if someone is healthy or not just because they are thin and look it...I didn´t know he smoked like a fire-engine. Did you see that Sarah Pallin is a runner, hiker, snowboader etc. Do you suppose she´s really healthy? I wonder....
Guess we´ll find out. I do know tho that both you and I are healthy right this minute, and we are NOT THIN. But we just might be one of these days....
Lynda
Thanks for stopping in Dougal and Lynda! I'm always so happy to see your smiling faces!
Yes, Lynda, I'm sure of our standing in health today. I KNOW we would beat out many 1/2 our age with all the focus we've had these last couple of years...AND to many more healthy and happy ones!!!!
Hugs friends...
Margaret
